About school nutrition training requirements

USDA Professional Standards

School nutrition staff must complete training relevant to their job each year.

The number of hours depends on your role:

  • Director - 12 hours
  • Manager - 10 hours
  • All other full-time staff - 6 hours
  • Part-time staff (<20 hours/week) - 4 hours

About ABCs + partners

ABCs of School Nutrition is a partnership between University of Illinois Extension and the Illinois State Board of Education.

University of Illinois Extension is the community outreach branch of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Extension educators are located throughout the state and work to improve their communities through research-based education.

Through the ABCs of School Nutrition program, we support all school nutrition professionals – from frontline workers to school administrators.

We are funded by the Illinois State Board of Education and USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – SNAP.
