Product-Based Added Sugar Limits: Evaluating Flavored Milk

milk carton

Under the new product-based added sugar limits, flavored milk will be limited to 10 grams of added sugars per 8 fluid ounces (or 1.25 g per fluid ounce). Let’s review how to evaluate a flavored milk option.

Example 1:

You are reviewing the chocolate milk you currently offer to make sure it meets the new guidelines. An 8 fluid ounce carton has 9 g of added sugars.

The new rules list a maximum of 10 grams added sugars per 8 fluid ounces, so your chocolate milk is compliant.

Example 2:

You see a new option for a fat-free, cookies and cream flavored milk. It lists 11 grams of added sugars per 8 fluid ounce carton. Unfortunately, this cannot be served as it exceeds the 10 gram limit.

As a result of the new regulations, companies may be reformulating products. Milk is already one of the most wasted foods in school nutrition programs. If you need to find new options, consider taste testing to evaluate which ones would be best accepted by the student population.
