Product-Based Added Sugar Limits: Evaluating Yogurt
Under the new product-based added sugar limits, yogurt will be limited to 12 grams or less of added sugars per 6 ounces, or 2 grams per ounce. Let’s review how to evaluate your current offerings as well as other potential products from your suppliers.
For quick reference, the USDA lists the following added sugar maximums for different yogurt serving sizes in ounces and grams.
- 2 oz (57 g) – 4 grams added sugars
- 3 oz (85 g) – 6 grams added sugars
- 4 oz (113 g) – 8 grams added sugars
- 5.3 oz (150 g) – 10 grams added sugars
- 6 oz (170 g) – 12 grams added sugars
- 8 oz (227 g) – 16 grams added sugars
Let’s walk through the process of evaluating a couple items.
Example 1:
You are reviewing a 6 oz container of yogurt that has 10 g of added sugars. Does that meet the limits?
Looking at the list above, a 6 oz serving of yogurt can have a maximum of 12 grams of added sugars. Yes, this yogurt meets the guidelines.
Example 2:
You are scoping out a new yogurt product for breakfast. The label says a 170 g serving has 15 g added sugars. Can it be served?
A 170 g (or 6 oz) serving of yogurt can have no more than 12 grams of added sugars. This one has 15, so no, it cannot be served.
